Challenge of the month - 午

The oracle bone inscription originally meant a mortar and pestle for pounding grain, which then was borrowed to mean noon due to sound-loan. When people used the pestle to pound the grain, the pestle was positioned in the center of the bowl, which indicated the meaning of something being in the middle or center. This meaning was developed to become the indication of time and direction. This inscription represents the character "午" (wǔ), translating to "noon".
